The five-member team of students work together to compete on five environmental topics -- soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife and current issues. The students also give a five minute oral presentation on a problem solving scenario related to the year's current issue topic.
The highest scoring team from each county will go on to compete in the New York State Envirothon, which is held in May at Morrisville State College. Other Westchester schools competing include Hastings and Woodlands high schools.
The Hudson Valley regional competition is co-sponsored by the Westchester County Department of Planning and the county’s Soil and Water Conservation District.
“Events such as this advance our students’ interest in science and our environment,” County Executive Robert P. Astorino said in a statement.
The primary goal of the Envirothon is to learn about the natural environment to become stewards of the land, according to the competition's website. In preparation for the event, students develop research skills, practice team building and gain an appreciation for consensus decision making.
The competition will be held April 26 at the Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill.
