NORWALK, Conn. A popular Norwalk road has been closed on and off for days, an anomaly in this summer of out-of-the-way paving projects.
Yankee Gas is replacing the gas main on Scribner Avenue between Connecticut Avenue and Flax Hill Road, according to Department of Public Works Director Hal Alvord, causing it to be closed during the day. When the utility work is done the city will repave the road, putting a permanent coat on the temporary job that was done last summer. He didn't know when that might be.
About $5 million is being spent on the city's pavement management program this summer, according to city documents available online. While the $6.7 million spent last year was obvious as major roads like Fairfield Avenue were on the list, most of the work being done this year is in neighborhoods, Alvord said.
The city would have paved Scribner Avenue last year but knew that Yankee Gas had work to do, he said.
"They tried to rearrange their budget to get in ahead of the paving," Alvord said. "They were not able to do that so we put what we call a shim, a skim coat of asphalt in on the street, go in and smooth it out."
