Gearity leads Hanauer decisively 58 percent to 42 percent, 436 votes to 316 votes, with 76 percent of the votes in.

Gearity, who is on the village board, challenged Hanauer, who is running for his 5th two-year term.

The two will meet again in the general election, with Hanauer running on the Working Families line.

Gearity said tonight was a victory for the people of Ossining.

"This was a grassroots movement that grew stronger and featured a diverse coalition from across the political spectrum," Gearity said. "Many had never participated in a political movement."

Gearity said voters want a village government that is responsive to folks in the community.

"The people of Ossining want to work together so it reaches its full potential," Gearity said. "I want to thank my supporters and I look forward to everyone working together."

Hanauer said he was looking ahead to November.

"I'm not happy with the results," Hanauer said. "But only a fifth of Ossining Democrats voted. That leaves Democrats, Republicans, Working Families and independents to vote in November. I intend to run an active campaign."

Hanauer said Gearity had the backing of the Democratic machine and despite his incumbency, he faced an uphill battle.

"I am surprised my experience did not win out over whatever she was offering," Hanauer said.
