WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - A 42-year-old White Plains man accused of committing a hate crime is facing a felony charge after allegedly sending an anti-Semitic email to Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner last month.

In response to a published article questioning the appropriateness of a Confederate memorial in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings, Feiner was targeted by an anonymous emailer that sent a message filled with anti-Semitic language, police said.

The subsequent police investigation into the email by Greenburgh Police Department detectives and the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office determined that White Plains resident Timothy Goetze allegedly sent the hate mail, and he was arrested this week on a felony charge of aggravated harassment.

Goetze was arraigned in the Town of Greenburgh Court and remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bond. He is due back in court later this week to answer the charge.

“While we respect everyone’s right to free speech, this was clearly a case where that line was crossed,” Greenburgh Police Chief Chris McNerney said in a statement. “We want to send a message that such hate filled threats will be fully investigated and those responsible will be brought to justice.”
