Police said another Ossining resident reported being confronted by the coyote.

"Our officers were in the area and were able to put the animal down," Ossining Police said in a statement. "It's never a happy day when we have to destroy an animal but in rare instances it is necessary for the health and safety of our residents. It's a responsibility we take seriously."

The coyote will be transported to the Westchester County Department of Health for testing, police said.

The coyote had been spotted at Mystic Pointe Condominiums off Route 9, and also near a private home on North Water Street, less than two miles away.

A trapper, Jim Horton of Quality Pro Pest & Wildlife Services in Tarrytown, who had been called in, had been confronted by the coyote Tuesday, but it escaped into the woods.
