The man was driving a white van and approached a middle school girl walking home from school at the intersection of Van Cortlandt Avenue and Route 9, police said.
The man told the girl her mom had been in an accident and that she needed to come with him, police said.
The girl waved him off and went home, police said. Police praised her for being sharp and for keeping hear bearing under stress.
Police said they are still investigating and put extra patrols near the schools on Tuesday.
Police said if anyone sees a white van near a school, they should write down the license plate number and call police. Children should also be reminded not to talk to strangers, police said.
