A 30-year-old man driving a BMW who crashed into a Putnam County Sheriff patrol car on the Taconic State Parkway has been charged with driving while intoxicated.

Deputy Shane Rossiter was on the right side of the northbound Taconic State Parkway in Putnam Valley, sitting in his marked patrol car with its emergency lights activated, after pulling over a vehicle for a routine traffic infraction on Tuesday, April 3 at approximately 2:20 a.m., Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley, Jr. said.

Rossiter had just issued a ticket to the driver of that vehicle and was in his car waiting for the driver to pull away when a white 2013 BMW struck the rear of Rossiter’s vehicle.

Additional members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s office, the New York State Police and an ambulance were then quickly dispatched to the scene.

An investigation by the New York State Police revealed that the driver of the 2013 BMW, Ashwin V. Ramnath, was driving while intoxicated. Ramnath's place of residence was not immediately released.

Police arrested Mr. Ramnath and charged him with two counts of driving while intoxicated.

Rossiter was transported to Putnam Hospital Center complaining of pain to his head and left hand.

Langley said he was grateful that the injuries to Deputy Rossiter were not more serious and stated that this incident is a reminder of how dangerous a routine traffic stop could be for law enforcement officers.
