Priest From Ossining's Maryknoll Serving In Nepal

OSSINING, N.Y. – A priest from Ossining’s Maryknoll Society has been serving in Nepal and now is focusing his efforts on helping people recently displaced by a massive earthquake.

The Rev. Joe Thaler, a member of Maryknoll since 1977, was not harmed in the earthquake, as he was in a neighboring country, according to a press release.

Thaler returned quickly to Nepal to help those people he typically serves, including the disabled, women and children, and factory workers.

One of Thaler’s employees lost his home in the catastrophe; the priest’s residence is still standing but has many cracks in it.

Many of Thaler’s supporters “are camping out in the fields or streets ... and living with a lot of fear and terror due to the continual aftershocks and not a clear vision of what will happen next,” he said in a press release.

Immediate needs of survivors in Nepal include blankets, food, mattresses, medical supplies and water. In the long term, funds will be needed to repair or rebuild homes.

“For sure we can’t rebuild all of the homes, but even to do a few to help some people will be very significant,” Thaler said.
