Con Edison crews began making permanent repairs Monday to several power lines damaged during Hurricane Sandy and the subsequent nor’easter. In order to restore services faster when Hurricane Sandy hit the area last month, Con Edison representatives previously said crews made emergency repairs to areas across Westchester County. Those repairs were temporary and would not be enough to withstand further damage during the winter, Con Edison officials said last week.

Briarcliff Village Manager Philip Zegarelli said Monday the outages should be temporary and some areas being repaired in Ossining could affect Briarcliff Manor residents.

“There are quite a few clusters around the village that are going to need those repairs,” Zegarelli said. “If they do it one place, it could affect somebody else later. It’s going to be pretty extensive because it’s going to take a little time to make those permanent repairs. And this needs to be done now because once the hard winter sets in, it’s going to be much harder to do that.”

Zegarelli added in an emailed update that the repairs could affect cable and telephone service as well.

“I have been meeting with Con Ed, and among other issues, we have been outlining the major overhaul and replacement of aged services,” Zegarelli wrote. “This is now being done on a stepped up basis this week and into the holiday season until our service feeder lines and residential connections are completed. This also means that the other utilities (phone and cable) may very well be further delayed since Con Ed has priority in the repair hierarchy: phone and cable repairs and rehanging of their wires may interfere with Con Ed’s role.”

The areas set for repair this week are Scarborough Road, the Pleasantville Road area, including Orchard, Iroquois, Croton, Stone and Old Briarcliff Road, Tappan Terrace, Hungerford, Schrade and Fuller roads. The work along Morningside and Pocantico roads and Gordon, Barns and Maurice avenues has been completed, Zegarelli said.

Con Edison representatives previously said the “permanent repairs” would be necessary to minimize power outages during the winter.

“The object during Sandy was to get everybody’s electricity restored. And in order to do that, in some neighborhoods and areas we had to put in shunts,” Con Edison Spokesperson Chris Olert said previously. “Those are temporary though and they’re not doing much but connecting wires that were broken. So crews need to go in and reconnect those lines permanently.”
