At a ceremony with friends, family and more, Mayor Victoria Gearity and the Village Board read a surprise resolution declaring Spring Street from Academy Place to Main Street as "Chief Burton Way."

The board said the route was named after Burton "because he has walked this route for years. Not because it's his post, but because he believes in waking downtown, talking to people, and knowing the community."

Burton began his police career in 1967 and became chief in 1991.
