OSSINING, N.Y. Val Polidoro was laughing and smiling on Monday morning despite having to deal with clean up after tropical storm Irene at his waterfront restaurant, The Boathouse.
"We never lost electricity so we didn't lose any food. It worked out better than I could've expected," Polidoro said.
The floor in Polidoro's restaurant dining room was mildly damp on Monday, and a light line on the wall showed that water had risen to about three and a half feet at one point during the storm.
"We got very lucky because the water wasn't in here for long," Polidoro said. "It came up during high tide but as soon as the tide subsided, the water went away."
Polidoro and his workers had prepared for the storm by moving out all of the restaurant's indoor electrical equipment and furniture, and tying up the tables and chairs that were on the outside patio so that they wouldn't float away.
"Our stuff is all over the place, at my house, at St. Ann's School," Polidoro said.
In preparation for the next storm, Polidoro said he was considering putting in WonderBoard, a type of waterproof wall material that is commonly used in bathrooms, to minimize wall damage.
Overall, Ossining suffered relatively little damage from Irene, with only 22 homes losing power out of a total of 43,000 homes county-wide that lost power, according to village Mayor William Hanauer.
On Monday, traffic lights on Route 134 by Route 9A were still out as Con Edison crews repaired damage. An email from Town Supervisor Catherine Borgia said that Morningside Drive by Ryder Park, the road in front of 124 Morningside Drive, and Croton Dam Road by Cherry Hill were all closed due to fallen trees.
While crews worked to restore electrical power to residents affected by Irene, Con Edison workers were distributing dry ice to customers between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Mount Kisco, Chappaqua and Mamoroneck Metro North stations, and at the Yorktown Triangle Shopping Center in Yorktown Heights.
Metro North officials said they expected to operate trains from Croton-Harmon to Grand Central on a Sunday schedule beginning at 2 p.m. on Monday. There would be no trains on Monday from Croton-Harmon north to Poughkeepsie, they said.
