A 16-year-old Valhalla High School student was the person struck and killed by a Metro-North train at the Valhalla Station, according to school district officials.

Officials with the MTA said the accident took place at 7:45 a.m., Monday when the Grand Central-bound Harlem train struck the "person" who was standing on the tracks at Cleveland Avenue.

The unidentified girl was rushed to Westchester Medical Center in critical condition, but later died from her injuries, MTA officials said.

Valhalla School District personnel were informed by the Mount Pleasant Police Department that the16-year-old had died from injuries sustained after being struck, said Valhalla Union Free School District Superintendent Dr. Karen Geelan.

MTA Police are currently investigating the incident.

At the parents’ request, the district is not releasing the student’s name, school officials said.

"Valhalla’s thoughts and support go to her family and friends at this difficult time," Geelan said.

Teams of counselors and administrators met with high school students this morning to share the news and notify them that the district has counselors available to help the school community deal with this loss. Trained crisis counselors are available to meet with students and staff today and in the coming weeks, as needed.

Valhalla High School will be hosting a meeting for parents and community members in the near future. Members of the school’s Emergency Response Team will provide information about common reactions following a student’s death and how adults can help their children cope. They will also provide general information about adolescent mental health and will address attendees’ questions and concerns. A meeting announcement is forthcoming.

For questions about additional resources, parents can contact school administrators and counselors at 914-683-5000.
