OSSINING, N.Y. -- Victoria Gearity is the choice of the Ossining Democrats in the race for mayor.
Gearity, who is opposing incumbent Democrat Bill Hanauer , was endorsed by the Ossining Town Democratic Committee.
"I am every excited to receive this overwhelming support," Gearity said. "I think it shows people share my vision for a vibrant downtown and sustainable growth. I am very excited to have such enthusiastic supporters. I am really focused on getting my message out and knocking on doors to hear about what we can do better."
Gearity said Ossining residents are tired of seeing Peekskill, Tarrytown and other communities establishing their own downtowns.
"We've heard lots of excuses but now is the time," Gearity said. "We need fresh and exciting ideas and I will engage the community to make that happen."
Gearity, who currently serves on the village board, received endorsements from Legislator Catherine Borgia and Town Supervisor Susanne Donnelly.
“As a village trustee, Victoria quickly demonstrated the kind of leadership that we need to help move Ossining forward," Borgia said. "Her grasp of the key issues, her openness to people, her willingness to discuss all points of view in search of new ideas, combined with her complete dedication to the village will help us all make Ossining an even greater place to live and work.” “Victoria understands and exemplifies the qualities we need–keeping our governments transparent, our residents informed and working together for the entire community," Donnelly said. As we establish inter-municipal agreements and work together to save taxpayer money, I am confident that Victoria’s innovative and forward-thinking leadership will help us all move forward together.”
Hanauer, who has been mayor since 2007, said he intends to pursue a primary with Gearity.
"It's not about policy or philosophy," Hanauer said. "Victoria and I vote similarly, in fact, we vote the same on everything. There is little question that I will win the popular vote."
Trustee Jon Codman and Omar Herrera were endorsed by the Democrats to run for village trustee.
