OSSINING, N.Y. -- Moms in Ossining -- 800 of them! -- have a place to turn to on Facebook if they have a question or concern.
Ossining Moms is a Facebook group that was formed two years ago and has grown to more than 800 members. The group serves as a home for moms (and dads) looking for information, whether it be about school closings or what to make for dinner. The group was formed after moms in Ossining realized how successful other groups were in other Westchester towns.
Women (and men) have used the page to borrow a tie, find the best vacuum, buddy up with a workout friend or help with a babysitter. The group is run by eight administrators, running the gamut from working moms, stay at home moms, business owners, politicians and volunteers. "I like being part of a group that brings people together. It's nice to see the friendships that have evolved from this page," explained Miriam Risko, one of the administrators. "We wanted a place where Ossining moms can turn to."
The group represents the diverse community of Ossining, said Risko.
In fact, she said she often will see someone she recognizes walking down the street, realizing that it's a mom from the group.
"It's like meeting a celebrity," said Risko. "I love that Ossining Moms has become the go to place for school and town news. I like the idea of bringing like minded people together. It's really opened up my social circle."
Barb Foshay Golecki, another administrator, called Ossining Moms her labor of love and said she is always finding out information she would've never known otherwise.
"We all want the same for our community: Communication," she said. "I count myself very lucky to be in such an amazing group. It is always evolving and growing and keeps us doing the same."
