A formal ceremony to mark the gift is scheduled for Sunday, July 10, at 5:45 p.m., prior to the Yorktown Lions Club Summer Concert series, featuring Group Du Jour, at the Jack DeVito Veterans Memorial FIeld.
Al Landzberg, a 55-year resident, completed the sculpture, titled Big Sky, in 2006, and immediately loaned it to the town for public display. Since then, it has graced the southeast corner of DeVito Field.
The 10-foot high centerpiece looms above a circular seating area with tables and benches and an old-fashioned street lamp. The sculpture is in full view of walkers and runners who use the field’s perimeter track. Lighting makes it visible at night to drivers on Veterans Road and Maple Hill Road.
The sculpture, which changes in appearance with the light in the sky, could blaze brightly under a hot sun, turn grey on a cloudy afternoon, or glow orange, then red at sunset.
During the July 10 dedication ceremony -- officiated by Supervisor Michael Grace and Yorktown Lions President and Town Councilman Ed Lachterman -- Landzberg will briefly discuss the history of Big Sky and what prompted his donation to the town.
For information on the ceremony, contact Ed Lachterman at 914-393- 1447 or edlachterman@gmail.com.
