Ossining High School Book Club To Host Day Of Awareness

OSSINING, N.Y. -- The Body and Soul Book Club at Ossining High School will host a Day of Awareness featuring author Kim Purcell on Tuesday, May 27, in the school's library.

The Day of Awareness is an outgrowth of the book club’s focus on reading about and discussing meaningful issues like bullying and cyber-bullying. Students who come to the book club, make observations, comment, share stories and learn from the characters in the books they read.

“We want to make some real issues come to life on this day,” said Sudha Narsipur, the high school's librarian. “This will be an all-day event with student discussions, presentations, a writing workshop and more.”

Purcell wrote the novel, "Trafficked," about a young woman in Moldova who takes a job as a nanny for a family in Los Angeles and finds herself trapped like a modern-day slave.

The author will be at the event to discuss her book and the real-life issue of human trafficking. School psychologist Esther Sohn will present her research findings on bullying and cyber-bullying.

The day will end with a yoga lesson from Tao Porchon-Lynch, 95, master yoga teacher. Students and teachers will have the opportunity to de-stress and meditate with Lynch at the OHS library.

The writing workshop is open to students and teachers only.

The Body and Soul Book Club meets two Wednesdays a month to discuss books on anti-bullying and to discuss issues large and small.
