OSSINING, N.Y. Cheers, excitement and a warm spring wind filled the air Saturday for the start of Ossinings JCYS Little League Baseball season.
After the traditional morning parade from Roosevelt School to Veterans Park, when more than 250 kids proudly showed off their new uniforms and banners on the streets of Ossining, loud cheers erupted for the start of the season.
While most teams have only been practicing for a few weeks, parents say the excitement for opening day has been on the minds of the kids for months.
You hear about it almost every day from the kids about how excited they are, so its really great to finally get to see them play and have fun with it, said Pam Borowiec, whose 10-year-old son, Timothy, picked No. 3 to honor Babe Ruth. The kids love their baseball and they collect the cards and watch the professional ballplayers on TV, and now they get to go out and play.
But its also a rare chance for families to come together and cheer, said Anne Zimmerman.
Its been very exciting in our household leading up to today, Zimmerman said. I really like the camaraderie and spending time with families you dont get to see often during the school year.
Parent Rob Horan said the 70-degree weather allowed for a perfect start to the season.
We got a huge turnout for the parade and its been really great for the kids to be able to play on a beautiful day, Horan said. It hasnt been like this in years for opening day, so everyone is really excited.
Coach Jim Curry said baseball season offers a chance for the players and their families to get together when school isnt in session.
The kids get to see each other in class but when its out they dont really get that chance and neither do the families, he said. The players are jumping up and down and having fun because its the start of something they love and its going to continue through the summer.
