Ossining's Lafiandra stars in baseball win

BRIARCLIFF, NY -- Briarcliff opened its Section 4 Big League Baseball game hitting Saturday and never stopped.

Briarcliff smacked 17 hits and went on to a 14-2 victory over Rockland (District 18) in a winners’ bracket game at Briarcliff High School.

The game was halted after five innings because of the 10-run rule. Briarcliff advances to the winners’ bracket final Sunday, 9 a.m., against the District 19 representative from Southern Dutchess County. Rockland moves to the losers’ bracket and will play Harrison, Sunday, at noon.

Anthony Lafiandra, a 2011 Ossining graduate, went 4 for 4, drove in three runs and scored three. Colin Orr, a Briarcliff resident, had a double among his three this, had two RBI and scored twice. William Conlin, a Katonah resident, also had three hits and scored two runs.

Briarcliff senior Joseph Karlik gave up five hits and struck out one. This after Rockland scored 17 runs in its opener against Harrison.

“We just wanted to come out, hit the ball well and get on the board first because we were the visiting team,” said Lafiandra, who will St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill (Rockland County) in the fall. The victors batted around in the first inning, scoring six runs. Zachary Shipp, Derek Badger and Michael Schwartz, both of Ossining, Orr and Lafiandra had RBI.

“We were all on the ball today,” Lafiandra said. “Yesterday, I went to the batting cage and I was making good contact, hitting the ball to all fields.” Karlik was in control from the start and had his curveball dancing. “He had good location, good speed and was baffling their hitters,” said Lafiandra or Karlik.
