Top-ranked UConn (1-1), the two-time defending NCAA women's basketball champions, hadn’t lost a game in November since 2004.
Chong played well for the most part of the Huskies in 35 minutes of action. She shot 8-for-13 from the field and had four rebounds and one steal. UConn coach Geno Auriemma praised Chong afterwards.
“I thought they totally outplayed our guards at both ends of the floor,’’ Auriemma said to the Connecticut Post. “Their guards were much more aggressive in getting into the lane and creating offense for themselves. Our guards, other than Saniya (Chong) … I think Saniya was the only one that we had that was aggressive enough and looking to create stuff. Everybody else …’’
Chong also started UConn’s season-opener, and scored 12 points in 22 minutes in a 102-43 win over Cal-Davis. Her previous career-high was 17 points in a game last year against Central Florida.
Chong, a sophomore, played in 39 of 40 games last year for the Huskies. She led Ossining to the New York girls basketball championship in 2013 and was named the 2012-13 Parade All-American Team's Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
Ossining fans who want to watch her play close to home could attend games in Bridgeport, Conn. on Dec. 19 against DePaul University or on Jan. 4, 2015 at Madison Square Garden against St. John's University. Click here for the UConn schedule.
