OSSINING, N.Y. Ossining was facing a two-game deficit going into game three of its Section 1 volleyball match Thursday with Westlake with no margin for error.
Ossining would rebound in a major way, rallying to win the match, 23-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-16 and claim the league title.
We knew going into the match that it was going to be a fight, Ossining coach Lauren Riccardi said. After losing the first two games, really close, the girls understood what it meant to win or go home so they responded by playing with such heart and determination. When the girls won game four, I knew they had it.
Saniya Chong had a huge game at the net with 32 kills. Kathryn Polletta chipped in with 10 kills and setter Katharine Baskind finished with 41 assists. Selena Drinks collected 10 digs, Katherine Aguilar added nine digs and five aces and Danielle Gervacio also had nine digs and contributed three aces. Ossining is 12-4 overall and 12-1 in league play.
Winning the league title is a tremendous victory for this team, Riccardi said. The girls have become a family and learned a lot this season. They were the underdogs all along but surprised everyone. I couldn't be more proud of them.
