Ossining Pride Swimmers Growing up in The Pool

OSSINING, N.Y. – The girls on Katrina Baker’s Ossining High School ’ swim team pushed themselves in each event against a stronger Rye swim team last week, finishing the early portion of the season with a 1-4 record but looking forward to faster times and a bright future.

“We have a very young group of swimmers who are really working hard to improve,” said Baker. “As a coach, you couldn’t ask for better kids. They are in the pool before you tell them and you have to pull them out at the end of practice.”

Ossining is competing in a new league alignment with top teams like Rye as school try to organize schedules locally to save on traveling budgets. The young Pride swimmers are already showing promise, with distance swimmer Wendy Snyder and sprinter Emma Klein turning in times that have, or are close to, meeting Section 1 postseason meet qualifying times.

“Emma has already qualified in the 50 and 100 free and Wendy is my distance girl in the 200 and 500 and right at the qualifying mark,” Baker said. “In a couple of years we’ll be able to compete in this league, which is extremely tough. We’re improving from one meet to the next.”

Baker said that building a swimmer and team is about taking each meet as a marker for progress.

“They’re having fun and improving,” Baker said of her girls. “You move from point A to point B, each girl getting a better time with each race. I’m proud of the effort and the results and we’ll only get better.

Ossining swims next swims against Byram Hills at home on Oct. 14.
