Ossining High Shortstop Belitz Chooses Marist

OSSINING, N.Y.  – Matt Belitz has dreamed of playing college baseball since he began fielding ground balls as a kid and now that dream has come true for the Ossining High School shortstop, who has committed to attend upstate Marist College in the fall.

“A group of Marist coaches watched me play in New Jersey this past summer and they emailed and asked me to consider going there,” said Belitz, who will play his senior season this coming spring. “I visited there and it seemed like the perfect fit for me. The coaches were so supportive and that really convinced me they wanted me.”

A one-sport student/athlete for the Pride, Belitz has concentrated his effort on baseball’s key position through his varsity career. The defensive star was a big part of the Pride’s first league title in 26 years. Ossining went 9-1 in league, 14-9 overall and won two postseason games Section 1 Class AA tournament.

“I’ve always played shortstop and little injuries here and there in other sports made me focus on baseball,” Belitz said. “All the work is paying off. We had a great year last year and I’m going to play college ball. I think I made a good decision concentrating on the sport I love.”

Belitz said his parents Michelle and Jeffrey have been supportive throughout his young career and credited his Ossining coaches, Bill Casey and former coach Lou Federico, and summer league coaches with helping hone his skills.

“My parents always support me in every way,” Belitz said. “I’ve had great coaching, which helped me develop the skills I need to play college baseball. And being at Marist makes it possible for family to see me play. I’m going to enjoy my senior year and look forward to going to play on the next level.”
