Ossining Football Faces Tough Test Against Somers

OSSINING, N.Y. – The Ossining High School football team will host Somers on Friday at 7 p.m. in what should be the Pride’s toughest game so far this season.

Ossining seems to have straightened out its season after an 0-2 start. The Pride has recorded back-to-back wins against Gorton and Pelham, but Somers will be the strongest team the Pride has faced so far.

The Pride’s offense was on display in a 39-20 win against Pelham last week. Soloman White provided the spark for Ossining as he returned kickoffs for 89-yard and 86-yard touchdowns.

Quarterback Justin Davidov continued to add to his stats with a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown last week.

Ossining also faces a brutal final three games against Somers, Poughkeepsie and Sleepy Hollow. The Pride will need every win it can get in the final three weeks, but Somers might prove too much for Ossining to overcome.

Somers is 4-0 this season and has proven itself a top contender, if not the team to beat, in Class A. The Tuskers defeated Poughkeepsie, 23-14, last week in a heavyweight showdown.

Now, Somers will have to avoid a letdown game against Ossining. Head coach Tony Dematteo is too experienced to let his team overlook the Pride, but the chance always remains that Somers could come out flat.

Somers has ridden running back Stefano Bicknese all season, and with good reason. The senior had 20 carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns against Poughkeepsie and has been the workhorse for the Tuskers all season. He leads the team with nine touchdowns.

Quarterback John Decker has also been a breath of fresh air for Somers as he has complete two-thirds of his passes and has been accurate and generally mistake-free throughout the season.

But Somers’ defense has been perhaps the most important element of its thus-far undefeated season. The Tuskers are allowing just 8.25 points per game, including a shutout against Pelham in week two.
