OSSINING, N.Y. Alex Cristello plays a fast-paced, up-tempo game for coach Dan Ricci on Ossining High's two-time defending Section 1 Class AA girls basketball team.
Even though basketball season is over, Ricci employs the same offensive philosophy with his Ossining girls lacrosse team. And Cristello loves it.
Ossining revved up the fast break for the second consecutive game and went on to a 21-8 win over visiting North Salem in a Section 1 girl's lacrosse game Wednesday.
Molly Malone led the way with eight goals, Danielle Gervacio netted four and an assist, Cristello registered four goals and collected two assists and Abby Squirrell had a hat trick.
Through two games, Ossining has outscored its opposition, 40-15. The Pride (2-0) host Briarcliff on Friday under the lights.
"Basketball and lacrosse are similar games in the way you play defense and the way you push the ball on offense," said Cristello, who had six goals in the season-opening win over Harrison. "It's all about making it fast paced. When you have the ball, you look up right away."
Cristello opened the scoring 64 seconds into the game. She and Malone alternated scoring Ossining's first four goals. Cristello ran the fast break to perfection, assisting on Gervacio's second goal of the opening half. Cristello picked up the ball off the face-off and charged down the field, dodging North Salem defenders and feeding Gervacio on the left post. She grabbed the pass and scored in one quick motion.
"We've been working well as a team, passing well and we are always looking for each other," Cristello said. Alyson Winter scored her first goal of the season and Grace Lombardi made 18 saves for Ossining.
Ryan Shaughnessy paced North Salem (0-3) with four goals, and Kaitlyn Murphy and Brittany Smith scored two each.
