PUTNAM VALLEY, NY -- The Hudson Valley Summer Field Hockey League will begin its 10th season Thursday with a full schedule at Putnam Valley High School.
There are 15 teams in the high school division and six teams in the open division. The open division was added in 2007 by league director and Lakeland field hockey coach Sharon Sarsen to give the recent high school graduates and college players an opportunity to continue playing since open field hockey had been eliminated from the Empire State Games. Open was reinstated this year after a two-year absence.
Games are scheduled for Monday and Thursdays from 6 through 9 p.m. Two games are run simultaneously, with the teams playing the width of the field.
The regular season runs through August 4. The playoffs are scheduled for Monday, August 8 and the finals will be played Thursday, August 11.
Lakeland is the defending champion and boasts two of the top players in Section 1 in Emma Bozek and Shannon Scavelli.
The high school division is divided into two pools. Pool A includes Carmel White, Harrison, John Jay-East Fishkill, Lakeland, Ossining, Walter Panas and Yorktown. Pool B has Carmel Red, Hen Hud, Horace Greeley, Lakeland Gold, Mahopac, Pawling, Pleasantville and Putnam Valley.
The six-team open group consists of Carmel, Hudson Valley, John Jay Alumni, Ninjas, Putnam Valley and Team Fockey.
We had three teams in 2007 and 08, Sarsen said. I reinstated it this year, hoping to have three or four teams, but we exceeded our expectations and will have six teams this year.
