Remarks also will be made by David Yassky, the dean of Pace Law School, Stephen Friedman, the president of Pace University and others.

Bharara was nominated by President Barack Obama in 2009 to become the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

In this role, he oversees the investigation and litigation of all criminal and civil cases brought on behalf of the United States in the Southern District of New York, which encompasses New York, Bronx, Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Sullivan counties.

Bharara recently oversaw the high-profile arrests of both leaders of the state Legislature.

Dean Skelos, the Republican leader of the state Senate, and his son were arrested Monday by federal authorities on extortion, fraud and bribe solicitation charges.

Sheldon Silver, the Democrat leader of the state Assembly, was indicted in February after federal bribery and kickback charges led him to resign from his position as speaker.

Bharara supervises an office of more than 200 Assistant U.S. Attorneys, who handle a high volume of cases that include domestic and international terrorism, narcotics and arms trafficking, white collar crime, public corruption, gang violence, organized crime and civil rights violations.

In 2012, Bharara was featured on the cover of TIME magazine and appeared on its list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.”

He also has been included on a variety of other noteworthy lists, including Bloomberg Markets Magazine’s “50 Most Influential” lists. He also has delivered commencement addresses at other law schools.
