Ossining Students Recognized For Excellence In NAACP Competition

OSSINING, N.Y. - Several Ossining students were recognized this weekend for outstanding work in the NAACP Westchester Regional ACT-SO competition.

ACT-So, the Afro - Academic, Cultural, Technological, Scientific Olympiad, is a yearlong enrichment program for high school students of African descent that culminates in a competition. Through the program, students demonstrate prowess in science, humanities, performing and visual arts and entrepreneurship. They are required to seek a coach to help them train and prepare for the competition.

Students can compete in one, two or three categories among the 26 offered. A regional first place winner in any category is eligible to compete in the national competition, which will be held in Orlando, Fla., in July as part of the NAACP national convention.

Ossining's winners this year are:

Jordan Boatman - Bronze Medal in Medicine and Health

Edward Aryee - Gold Medal in Earth Science Isabella Japal - Honorable Mention in Original Essay Gabriel Kates-Shaw - Silver Medal in Original Essay Akiera Gilbert - Gold Medal in Original Essay Marcus Roman - Honorable Mention in Music: Vocal Contemporary Marcus Roman - Bronze Medal in Music: Instrumental Contemporary Fatou Cisse - Silver Medal in Photography Akiera Gilbert - Gold Medal in Photography
