Ossining High School business students are offering to help prepare taxes for residents for free through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program being offered from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays through tax season in room 111 at the high school.

While it is common for many people to use a professional tax service at this time of the year, business teacher Debora Jacoby said residents shouldn’t have any fears about the quality service from the students.

“We spent six whole weeks training through taking IRS exams, taking ethics tests and anyone who comes in their information will be completely confidential and done very well,” Jacoby said, adding that she worked on a similar program in college. “The students are very professional and I think it’s a great experience for students and it’s great for the community to see their tax dollars at work.”

Every accounting student in the program had to pass a series of exams in order to qualify, Jacoby said. In addition, all returns will be reviewed by Jacoby, who is a certified public accountant. The service is limited to taxpayers earning less than $51,000 a year, officials with the school district said. Taxpayers are asked to bring a photo ID, Social Security cards for the taxpayer and any dependents, as well as tax documents including W-2 forms and 1099s.

Jacoby said any residents with specific tax questions or concerns could call or visit during the sessions to receive assistance. Those with concerns are asked to call 914-762-5760, ext. 2344 or email Jacoby at djacoby@ossining.k12.ny.us.
