Ossining School Spirit Wins MSG Grand Prize

OSSINING, N.Y. – Hundreds of Ossining High School students stormed the football field Friday afternoon after what is sure to become a symbol of pride in the district.

The Ossining School District beat out more than 60 schools in the tri-state area to win MSG Varsity’s School Spirit Mania 2012 contest. Representatives from MSG Varsity were at Ossining High School to present the school with the grand prize – a customized two-seat club car emblazoned with Ossining colors and logos. The presentation was the culmination of a many weeks long online competition in which thousands of Ossining supporters beat out the competition with their school spirit.

“I think it’s beautiful, and it says a lot about our spirit,” said 18-year-old senior and varsity football captain Brian Connolly. “Our school is the Pride, but more than that we really have pride, and I think this is a great thing.”

Although the contest awarded the grand prize to the district, Ossining Athletic Director Jim Dennett said students and staff rallied together to win the prize for Athletic Trainer Luis Iglesias, whose club car broke down a few weeks ago.

“It was a school effort for sure, but it was also a community effort,” Dennett said. “We had so many people in our community jump on board with Facebook, Twitter and everything else to get this. We wanted to win this for Luis because he’s someone who embodies the idea of school spirit and pride every day.”

During the presentation, Dennett presented the keys to club car to Iglesias.

“I know they say it’s for me, but we did it for the whole school and the whole community,” Iglesias said. “I’ve been involved with the schools since 2004, and it’s the best thing that could happen to me to work in this place and with these kids. It’s a reflection of what we do together every day.”

Iglesias is always helping students achieve greatness, Connolly said.

“It means a lot to us because it means we’re repaying Luis for all he does for us,” Connolly said. “He dedicates his life to helping us out. He gets here early and leaves late, and he does it all with a smile on his face.”

The award was not only an achievement for the school district but for the entire community as well, Village of Ossining Mayor William Hanauer said.

“It shows, not only to everyone who lives in this community but to everyone who doesn’t live in this community, what a wonderful place this is,” Hanauer said. “The students in our schools win all sorts of awards from sports to science to music to theater achievements. What they do here shows in our entire village.”

MSG Varsity representatives said the presentation will air at 7 p.m. Monday on High School Sportsdesk, a weekly prep sports show on Channel 14. Those interested in seeing more on the presentation to the Ossining School District, residents should go to the MSG Varsity website .
