OSSINING, N.Y. –  In a letter to parents, Ossining School District nurses are warning parents of the Enterovirus D68, which recently has been found among school-aged children in New York state, after affecting children in several other states.

The virus spreads through coughing, sneezing or touching surfaces.

Mild symptoms may include fever, runny nose, sneezing and cough, as well as body and muscle aches.

Nurses are urging parents to not send their children to school if they are experiencing these symptoms and to keep children at home until they are fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of medication.

Nurses are asking parents to remind children to wash their hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds; avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands; and avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.

District staff is reminding students to cover their mouths when coughing and sneezing, throw their tissue in a trash can, and not share any personal items.

According to the letter, most of the children who got very ill with EV-D68 infection had trouble breathing, and some had wheezing. Many of these children had a history of breathing problems due to asthma or cystic fibrosis.

Health-care providers should be contacted if children are having trouble breathing or if parents shave any concerns.
