Students have been using social media sites, including Yik Yak, to post anonymous statements that are both offensive and inappropriate, according to the release.
Threats have recently occurred at Ossining High School and at Yorktown High School.
Last week, students informed the administration that there were negative and offensive postings/comments about other students and faculty members. These postings/comments were made on Yik Yak, according to the release.
Students were concerned with the statements, and there have been various e-mails from parents/guardians expressed similar concerns, the release said.
"There have been a number of steps taken to appropriately address this issue," said school officials.
"We have placed a "geo-fence" around our schools. A "geo-fence" prohibits anyone from downloading this app within a 1.5-mile radius of our schools. Additionally, we have worked in close partnership with our local police department regarding these concerns."
The school district asks that parents speak to children about the appropriate use of social media. Additionally, the school district strongly recommends having children remove the app from their cell phones and other electronic devices, the release said.
