Ossining Library Budget Passes; Joselow, Jay, Manning Elected to Board

OSSINING, N.Y. — The Ossining Public Library will be open for two more hours every week next year after voters on Tuesday approved the library’s $3.6 million budget by 1,796 to 1,018.

The budget is set to increase to $3,651,479 from the previous budget of $3,622,016. The library Board of Trustees will also welcome Alice Joselow (1,481 votes) and Lucinda Manning (941 votes). President Art Jay won his bid for re-election, receiving 1,305 votes. Joselow and Jay will each serve three-year terms, while Manning will serve a two-year term. Madeline Zachacz (927 votes) and Allyn G. Heald (697 votes) did not earn enough votes for one of the open positions. Candidates were not immediately available for responses Tuesday night.

The budget represents a 2.26 percent increase, which translates to a per-capita increase of $2.32. Board members said previously that approval of the budget would mean opening the library for two more hours every week. If the budget was not approved, the board would have had to make cuts to staff and programs.

Library Director Jim Farrell said he was pleased that the budget passed.

“I’d just like to thank the public for coming out here and supporting us,” Farrell said, adding that it was important that the budget passed after the library was forced to cut 14 hours when the budget did not pass in 2011. “We heard the message last year loud and clear, and this year we tried to bring back services and do more with less. We’re looking forward to being open two more hours now.”

The Ossining Public Library serves 34,230 residents in the Ossining Union Free School District in the Town and Village of Ossining, Briarcliff Manor and Yorktown. While residents in Briarcliff Manor and Yorktown will see their average annual per-capita tax for the Ossining Library rise to $105.21 from $102.89 this year, they will also pay library taxes in their own communities.
