Ivanov received first-place honors and a $12,000 undergraduate scholarship in the Medicine & Health category for research on Investigating the Protective Effects of Interleukin 22 on Intestinal Epithelium: Potential Graft-versus-Host Disease Treatment, according to a press release.

Ivanov's research focused on the promise of a specific protein, interleukin-22, in mitigating the devastating side effects that accompany bone marrow transplant patients who are recovering from various blood cancers, according to an announcement from Ossining High School.

Her work contributed to fighting a condition known as graft-versus-host disease, and she has submitted her paper for publication in the scientific peer-reviewed journal Nature, according to the OHS announcement.

Ivanov conducted her research in the van den Brink & Hanash laboratories at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

More than 8,000 students from across the country competed in regional competitions that led to this national event. They presented their original research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to compete for educational scholarships and recognition from the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force.
