Veterans met with participating students in April; the students then had two weeks to create projects telling the stories of the veterans.

“Ossining High School has completely wrapped their arms around the veterans and there’s a comfort zone here,” Robert Ferguson of Mahopac, a Vietnam War veteran, said in a press release.

Ossining High seniors Robert Cafarelli and Jason Zhizhpon produced a short film telling Robert Somerville’s story. Somerville, an Ossining resident, is a Vietnam War veteran.

Cafarelli said in a press release that doing justice to Somerville’s story was a challenge and at times “hard to piece together and make it as good as it could be.”

The Living History Veterans Project “is a very emotional, yet satisfying, event where the veterans feel thankful that the students took the time to recognize them,” Ron Whitehead, an art teacher at Ossining High School and a Gulf War veteran, said in a press release.

“The overall lesson in this project is that people should use their talents to help others.”
