Mercy College Receives $1 Million For Scholarships

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- Mercy College received a $1 million gift for scholarships from the Give Something Back Foundation.

The gift will enable 50 eligible high school students to attend Mercy College at no cost for tuition, fees and room and board, as soon as fall of 2020, according to the announcement. 

Robert Carr, founder of Give Back, presented the award to Mercy College President Tim Hall, at a ceremony Nov. 4.

"There are many dedicated and deserving students in New York who will have a much brighter future thanks to the help of this foundation and we look forward to the opportunity of welcoming these students to Mercy College," Mercy College President Tim Hall said.

Give Back was established by Robert O. Carr, former chief executive officer of Heartland Payment Systems, a company sold in spring 2016, said the release.

It provides mentoring and scholarships to qualified students of modest means so they can attend college and graduate in four years with no debt for tuition and fees or room and board. 

Since 2015, Give Back partnered with six universities in New Jersey before expanding into New York. 

“Give Back is thrilled to partner with Mercy to realize our vision of making a four-year college education available to qualified students of modest means in New York State,” said Carr. 

“Mercy consistently ranks as a top school in the nation and New York, and is recognized for its commitment to a world-class mentoring program to help its students achieve success.”

Give Back will hold informational sessions in New York in order to identify eligible high school ninth graders as scholarship recipients. 

The students selected with be paired with mentors to advise and prepare them for college.
