Farmer’s organization is a nonprofit community of more than 650 universities, companies, nonprofits and government organizations nationwide working together to increase participation of women and girls in computing and technology.
NCWIT equips change leaders with resources for taking action in recruiting, retaining and advancing women in grades kindergarten to 12 and higher education through industry and entrepreneurial careers.
The event was hosted by Mercy College Trustee Kay Cioffi.
Of the event and Farmer’s presentation, Cioffi said, “Mercy College, a federally designated Hispanic-serving institution, values NCWIT's thought leadership and programs as well as the opportunity to work closely with them to empower our Latina students. We want to see these young women engage in meaningful and high-potential computing careers – and we will help them on their journey.”
During her presentation, Farmer specifically spoke about how to attract and engage Latinas to technology and how NCWIT’s TECHNOLOchicas program has made progress with partners such as the Apple, EMC, the Eva Longoria Foundation, CAHSI, Google, Microsoft, the Televisa Foundation and Univision.
Mercy has been a member of the NCWIT Academic Alliance for the past two years.
As a result of this partnership, the college is a recipient of the center’s Extension Services for Undergraduate Programs, which helps academic departments of computing develop high-impact strategies for recruiting and retaining more female students.
