The middle school hosted a literary tasting that allowed 6th graders to act as sous chefs as they tested different literary genres.
"They'll be able to look at books they wouldn't have previously looked at," Katherine McCabe, the middle school librarian, said. "They can sample a book. The goal is for them to look at everything and find something that looks good."
The students dined on pretzels and water as they perused their literary options. Students made a list of the books they were interested in at the end of their "meal."
McCabe said she saw another school that had done a tasting and felt it was something good for the 6th graders to enjoy. She said 8th graders were complaining that they didn't get to enjoy literary tastings.
Jackson Muro said he prefers to read books about sports and said he enjoys Matt Christopher. He also said he enjoys James Patterson's Middle School Diaries.
"I'm looking forward to finding some new books," Muro said.
Other students said they enjoyed reading comic books and graphic novels and were hoping the literary tasting would allow them to broaden their horizons.
"Anything we can do to keep them reading," Susan Mauriello, a 6th grade English teacher said. "They are readers and events like this just keep them going."
Teachers hoped the event gave students a chance to find books they would read over their Christmas break and keep their minds active.
"Kids who read at a young age are more likely to be lifelong readers," Sue Howard, principal at Briarcliff Middle School said. "There's so much wonderful literature out for them."
Howard said students at Briarcliff are avid readers.
"I like to read a lot of young adult literature so I know what they are chatting about," Howard said.
