The students' hard work paid off during the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair on March 7.
“These were our best results at this competition in several years,” said teacher Michael Inglis. More than 450 students from around the county participated in the competition, with Briarcliff students standing out in many categories.
The awards were given as follows: Grand Prizes ISWEEEP, Grand Prize Award — Robert Karp and Karthik Rao; Best in Category Awards, Second Place — Robert Karp and Karthik Rao; Third Place — Nicole Silberman; Fourth Place — Joshua Gottleib, Rebecca Handsman, Clara Prish, Arjun Rao, Will Follis, Ishan Tewari and Edwin Zhou; General Awards, ASU Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiative Award — Chris Fischer; Excellence in Medical Research Award — Alex Ross Phillips; Research for Exceptional Research Award — Parker Litchfield; Mu Alpha Theta Award for Mathematics — Edwin Zhou Ricoh; Sustainable Energy Award — Cole DiNome; Office of Naval Research Award — Melanie Prinz and Sydney Wolin; U.S. Air Force Award — Shivani Dave; Surgeon General’s Special Science Award — Harrison Moyle; Environmental Perspiration Award — Patrick Curran; and the Mianus River Gorge Ecology Award — Molly Rickles.
“Briarcliff has won the mathematics award every year for the last nine years,” Inglis said. “The district extends its congratulations our math students and their teachers.” Senior Robert Karp and junior Karthik Rao, whose project, “A Network Flow-Based Approach for Post-Merger Airline Hub Consolidation,” was selected as a Siemens Competition regional finalist, will compete in the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and Environment Project competition in May.
The Houston competition brings together 700 students from all over the world.
“Congratulations to all students on their very strong showing at WESEF,” said Board of Education President Jennifer Rosen. “We are impressed with their accomplishments and wish Mr. Karp and Mr. Rao luck as they head to Houston.”
