Elizabeth Ann 'Betty' Lyon, 89, Former New Rochelle Resident

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Lyon -- a resident of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, formerly of New Rochelle -- died on Thursday, Feb. 25. She was 89.

Born in Pelham Manor, Lyon graduated from Pelham Memorial High School and trained as a nurse at Mount Vernon School of Nursing in the Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. She later graduated from the College of New Rochelle with a bachelor of arts degree.

After retiring to Pawleys Island, South Carolina, Lyon became a member of Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church. She was chair of the Dorcas Disciples, a deacon, a choir member, a Stephen Minister and a recipient of the Presbyterian Women's Honorary Life Membership Award. She was also a volunteer for Tidelands Community Hospice and an avid tennis player.

Lyon is survived by her children, Geof Lyon of Rockport, Massachusetts, Leland Lyon of Roanoke, Virginia, Greg Lyon of Mamaroneck, and Beth Wheeler of Little Rock, Arkansas; grandchildren Lee, Heather, Lauren, Olivia and Hunter; and sister Aileen Cronan of Shawnee Mission, Kansas.

She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Fred Lyon; parents Joseph and Helen Shields; brothers Joseph Shields Jr. and William Shields; and sisters Helen Lynch and Ann Nichols.

A service was held on Feb. 28, at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church Cemetery, on Pawleys Island. Goldfinch Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
