Teachout, Supporters Criticize Cuomo At Ossining Rally

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Zephyr Teachout, a Fordham University law professor who is making a Democratic primary challenge to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, had tough words for her opponent at a rally near Ossining's waterfront on Tuesday, Aug. 5.

Teachout, along with other speakers, criticized Cuomo and the administration on educational topics such as Common Core implementation, unfunded mandates and high-stakes testing.

“Schools thrive when the funding is there, the classes are small, the teachers are trusted,” Teachout said.

Adam Yuro, an Ossining resident and Bedford school teacher who previously served as a union president in the district, criticized the governor over unfunded mandates, the cap on the property tax levy and testing.

“Cuomo has arrogantly portrayed himself as the only real advocate for the children of New York State.”

Among other critics who spoke was Lisa Rudley, a founder and president of Ossining Citizens For Schools.

Rudley, a Briarcliff Manor resident and Ossining school district parent, said that the Common Core learning standards were “miserably implemented” and argued that schools have been underfunded.

Teachout also assailed Cuomo regarding the Moreland Commission – it was reported on recent by The New York Times in an investigative story – and accused him of being silent.

“One of the most fundamental jobs of leadership is to act but also to explain,” she said.

Meanwhile, a challenge from Cuomo’s campaign against Teachout over her residency has a Thursday court date in Brooklyn, according to The Journal News. At the rally, Teachout disputed the allegation and described the challenge as frivolous.

In addition to Teachout and Cuomo, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino is running as the Republican candidate.
