Dr. David Levy, who is married to Pataki's daughter Allison, is in the intensive care unit at a medical center in Chicago, Pataki's campaign said in a statement.

Pataki, the former three-term New York governor and Peekskill mayor, has not suspended his campaign, a spokesperson said.

Levy and Allison Pataki were on a flight from Chicago to Seattle for a vacation before the birth of their first child, when Levy suffered a life-threatening stroke, Pataki's campaign office said. Their plane was diverted to Fargo, N.D., where he was in intensive care before being transported to Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

"This episode is a shock to us all, as David, only 30 years of age, is a strong young man who enjoyed excellent health," Pataki said in a statement. "We are praying for his recovery and welcome everyone’s prayers and good wishes.”
