Astorino, who is serving his second term as Westchester county executive, will run with Chemung County Sherriff Chris Moss as his lieutenant governor. Both were unanimously nominated by all delegates at the 2014 New York Republican State Convention.

A constant applause line Thursday was the promise to repeal the Safe Act, which Astorino said turns law-abiding citizens into criminals. Moss said it turned law enforcement officers into criminals.

Astorino touted the addition of 30,000 jobs to Westchester in the last four years and promised to bring tens of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars to New York. He said cutting taxes and allowing natural gas exploration will help achieve that.

He also said he would replace Common Core with higher standards set at the local level and create an Education Investment Tax Credit.

"I proudly, emphatically, unconditionally, and enthusiastically accept your nomination for governor of the State of New York, because this once great state needs to be great again, and I will not rest until we’re back on track toward getting there," Astorino said in his acceptance speech.

He painted a picture of a New York that has fallen behind in its economic outlook, education and healthcare delivery, and has the highest property taxes in the nation. He said politicians have spent too much and served their own interests rather than those of the people they serve. This, Astorino said, has led to three million people leaving New York in the last 20 years, and 41 percent of current New Yorkers say they want to leave.

"We need leaders who are willing to put their necks on the line to fix the problems," he said. "Political leaders willing to lose re-election to save the state."

By asking Westchester's unions to pay a portion of their healthcare and making budget cuts, Astorino said he risked angering some to benefit the county. As a result, he said the size of county government has dropped 4 percent and $100 million has been saved by consolidating services and departments, cutting waste, and reducing overhead.

In addition to cuts, Astorino said he has strengthened the social safety net. County legislators included $900,000 for Title XX funding, which subsidizes child care costs. This increase will allow open enrollment for the first time since 2010 with 180 more slots.

Astorino likes to say that he uses the "Three Ps" to guide his governance: Protect tax payers, Preserve essential services and Promote economic growth. Following that same rule of threes, he said Thursday that you need three body parts to be a good leader.

"You need a head to do the smart things and a heart to show compassion," he said. "But, probably more than either of those, you need a spine to stand firmly against the nonsense that seeps into government.

"I’ve tried to lead with all three in Westchester -- head, heart, and spine -- and I’ll do the same in Albany, together with my Lt. Governor Chris Moss."

Abortion, gun control, gay rights....all important and valid issues. HOWEVER, if you don't have smart leadership, nothing gets accomplished...isn't Cuomo a prime example. What you can expect from this throwback "thug" is coverup (Moreland Commission on Ethics disbanded), the pipeline to encourage jobs (three years of "review"), continuing the Same entrenched leadership in Albany, Sheldon Silver and the like.....oh for Term Limits!!....Rob Astorino has New, With It, and Open surrounding him...it's time for the Greatest State to draw Corporations once again, not Gambling and what that draws!!

Go Rob! We need you to lead NY and defeat the leftist, statist and corporatist Cuomo and the corrupt one-party rule Dems.

Rob Astorino is our only hope for a better New York!

It is upsetting as a woman to admit the stupidity of so many of us when it comes to politics. Women, wake up, it is not just about birth control and abortions. If this Democratic regime persists, the rights you lose will be much greater. We are fast becoming a socialist country! The government will control many aspects of our lives. Besides, the only abortions that conservatives want to end are late term abortions. These fetuses are then babies that can survive outside the womb! Any women that feel this is against women's rights are guilty of condoning murder! Are there any morals left in the Democratic Party? I think not!

every republican just voted against equal pay for women. Abortion has nothing to do with anything. that was decided in the 70's...wake up!!!!

Democrats under Obama, the most hypocritical in history. Say one thing but do another when it comes to themselves. If the Democrats are so upset over equal pay for women, perhaps they should look at Obama's White House right now! Fact is that the women there are paid 12% less than the men!

no, just seems like your an extremists who's out of touch with reality. again, Abortion was decided in the 70's by Roe V Wade. seems like you need a history lesson, in addition to some therapy

You are obviously one of the brainwashed by Obama! He has been a total failure and the US has become the laughing stock in most countries. Why has our rating been downgraded so many times? Why has Obama care, after costing us millions, failed? What happened to Fast and Furious? What happened to the Benghazi lies, "it was caused by a video"? Why is it that you don't hear about his affiliation with Bill Ayers, George Soros, and other communists? The liberals are quickly talking this country down and we are fast becoming a socialist nation.

Obama's AG, Eric Holder, another failure, is the one who started the Fast and Furious agenda. He stated it was being done to send firearms to Mexico in hopes the Mexican drug cartels would kill each other. Then he claimed all the hundtreds of thousands of weapons were unaccounted for. The real agenda was to send the firearms into urban areas in the U.S. so there would be more killings with guns, and the Federal government would have a "good reason" to attempt confiscation of privately-held firearms.

the two comments above are so extremist and radical and wackanoodled, that I"m not even going to respond, you just made my job really easy by exposing exactly where your coming from. you are both so out there and definitely on the wrong side of history. good luck with that

GreenburghDad, there's nothing "so extremist and radical and wackanoodled" about my comment. It's fact, but you refuse to believe it, since you obviously have a one track mind, as do millions of others, and that's why this entire country is continuing in the wrong direction.

we will continue to move in the right direction while you remain on the wrong side of history.

GreenburghDad, the same thing was said by the people of Germany and their legitimately elected new leader in the late 1930s, and we know what followed.

What Bill are you referring to where Republicans voted against equal pay? I think you better wake up? This is false!

No, the current 10 point Bill Mr. Silver is sitting on, he refuses to let the women's issues out on the floor unless it contains the abortion (extreme) words,

Yes abortion is fully legal in NY.

We are proudly the abortion capital of the nation.

In The Bronx more minorities are subject to abortion than anywhere in New York State; what a place, three cheers !

What more do you want post birth abortion, because that is about all that remains.

oopsy, somebody needs to start keeping up with current events

Paycheck Fairness Act of 2014

Every single Republican voted Against it

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/senate-republicans-reject-equal-pay-bill/2014/04/09/ce011342-c003-11e3-b574-f8748871856a_story.html

You're talking about a proposed federal law while we're all talking about the law Cuomo wants for NYS which has 10 parts to it. Its the 10th point that would expand NY abortion laws to allow what's commonly known as Late Term Abortions.

The Republican led NYS Senate passed the 1st 9 points but rejected the Late Term Abortion point. The Democrats in Albany insist on having the Late Term Abortion language included so nothing passed.

Most Republicans did NOT vote against it. It was the Democrats who stopped it because they (Democrats) wanted to make it a thousand pages loaded with special funding for their own favorite projects, and they had a hard time convincing many in their own party that it was the right thing to do.

Activist bill. you can see the votes on the governments website. it's not some conspiracy, every republican voted against it. that's reality, if you choose not to believe it, and live in your own world, then so be it, but in reality, Every Single Republican Voted Against this bill. Every single one.

The Republicans voted against it because the Democrats were loading it up with a thousand pages of "pork" for their own personal interests and supporters. It works both ways.

somebody needs to stop watching Faux news so much

And somebody needs to stop believing Media Matters so much.

it has nothing to do with media. the votes are recorded and available for the public to see, you don't need any media outlet to see that every republican voted against the bill. and you are just grossly misinformed, the bill was not "Loaded up with pork" not at all. it was a simple bill really, equal pay for women for equal work. period, the GOP voted against it, your denial of reality will get you no where

It was NOT a "simple bill". It was loaded with pork, as Democrats do with any bills they present. Republicans are guilty of it too, but the Democrats do it more often, just as they did with the ACA.

here's a link to the bill. it's one page long, the only thing covered in it is Equal pay for women. you can read the whole bill here in it's entirety. Every single Republican has voted against it 3 different times that it's been put forward. wherever you are getting your information from. you should be pissed at them, because they have been lying to you.

New York is in trouble from the ground up...special interst groups have been running this State far too long. No young person wants to live here any longer, nor can they afford to.....who wants to return home to mom and dad, yet it is totally unaffordable once they leave college. This is why Houston, San Antonio and Austin are draining our young and brightest.....affordability!! Gov. Cuomo is so out of touch with what the average middle-class guy wants from his State...time for him to go, and Astorino is Perfect....young, smart, "with it", and lovely young family to look at....breath of fresh air all around!!

While there may be some issues with regard to definitions in the Safe Act, I am still confused as to why anyone needs an assault rifle, and how I am not safer if my neighbor doesn't have one. I also do not get the need for large cartridges. It is a reasonable safeguard to have firearms registered, have renewals, and be required to keep them safely stored particularly away from troubled kids. It is also reasonable to do what we can to keep weapons away from the mentally ill. I believe in gun rights but these are reasonable restrictions that are clearly in accord with our Constitution.

The simple concept here is that most gun owners are law abiding citizens and most criminals, by definition, are not and these criminals don't really care if its against the law to carry an assault rifle or a Saturday Night Special.

Also, how many murders are committed with assault rifles? Not many and I'd bet most are done with illegal and unregistered hand guns. And criminals don't register their weapons anyway.

I still don't see why anyone needs an assault rifle.

But do they need to be banned?

What about sport shooting ect?

you should visit Australia. you can have a gun, just need to register it and have a background check,. since the passed the law in the 90's there has not been a single mass murder and Murders happen on a yearly basis. if there's a single murder, the whole country stops in shock and awe. here's it's daily routine. it's actually miraculous the effects background checks have had,

All of Adam Lanza's firearms were registered and yet he still committed mass murder. Same for the Colorado movie theater maniac, and others too. And as someone else has stated, only honest law-abiding people will register their firearms; the criminals will continue doing as they want.

registering is not enough (obviously) Thorough Background Checks are needed and verification you need a firearm for some specific reason, be it hunting, own a farm, etc. There is no reason for assault rifles or automatic weapons, hunters wouldn't use them, the only use for Assault or automatic weapons is plain and clear, to take multiple human lives very quickly, that is it. These are banned in Australia, and combined with stringent background checks, it has been VERY successful. with 0. yes 0 mass shooting in Australia since the ban

What are the good people of NY smoking to want Cuomo back in? He took away our gun rights, our taxes are still high, he bailed his girlfriend out Sandra lee when she did building to her house without getting the right permits. Cuomo is like all liberals, don't like conservatives or libertarians. Get rid of the old Italian Hag and vote Astorino in. He will restore our gun rights. Sheldon Silver needs to
be recalled the sorry pathetic troll.

Face it Astorino & Moss represent the New York we need to have.

Not the bitterness toward people who do not march to the tune current Governor with his team.

We need a New York that will return to a hub of:
careers of skilled crafts people making things of value from raw materials,
producing the fuels we need for life,
skilled professional people like engineers, teachers, etc. who bring a thirst for creativity across the board.

Rob & Chris have the skills to do all these and more.

Kudos to the 100+ folks standing outside the Hilton in the rain to protest Astorino's stance on women's rights! http://polhudson.lohudblogs.com/2014/05/15/republican-convention-draws-protesters-astorino/

Isn't that just about legalizing late term abortions?

Most don't want that. I certainly don't
