To the Editor,

On Tuesday, October 10th, I am hosting a Town Hall meeting to discuss the

pros and cons of a single payer healthcare system in New York State. I have

gotten many emails and phone calls from my constituents asking about what

the single payer healthcare system is, and what it will do. This forum

provides an opportunity to address any questions you may have.

Healthcare- and who pays for it- has become one of the most discussed topics

in America. As Congress debates ways to improve and replace the Affordable

Care Act, another discussion wages in our state government over whether a

government run system can cure New York's healthcare woes. Assemblyman

Richard Gottfried and Senator Gustavo Rivera have introduced legislation,

A.4738/S.4840, to establish a uniform single payer system for every resident

of the state. The goal of this bill would be to ensure that all residents of

New York would be fully covered for all medically necessary services. Such

services would include the medical supply costs for primary, preventive,

specialists, hospital, mental, dental, vision, and prescription drugs.

There are both pros and cons to creating a single payer healthcare system

which will be discussed at my meeting on October 10th by expert panelists

including Assembly Member Richard Gottfried, Director of Heath Policy for

the Empire Center for Public Policy Bill Hammond, Past President of the

Westchester Medical Society and Westchester Academy of Medicine Dr. Thomas

Lee, and Physicians for a National Health Program NY Metro Chapter Dr. Betsy

Rosenthal.

Hope to see you at my discussion to ask questions of the experts and to

learn more about this healthcare proposal.

Sincerely,

Sandy Galef
