Hanauer, who has been mayor since 2006, is running in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, Sept. 9, against village Trustee Victoria Gearity.

The mayor said he is intelligent, committed and honest. When he's not running the village of 20,000, Hanauer is an associate member of Independent Hose Company #6 of the Ossining Volunteer Fire Department and an American Field Service volunteer, along with being a husband, father and community activist.

"I enjoy cooking, opera, theater, travel, architecture, municipal planning, entertaining and historic house restoration," Hanauer said.

As Westchester's only openly gay mayor, Hanauer said he is passionate about equal rights for all and rights for LGBT people.

"I believe in social justice and elimination of inequalities of all kinds," Hanauer said.

Hanauer, who volunteers at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, said he also is passionate about prison reform and the rehabilitation if the incarcerated and their integration when they are released.

"[I am also passionate about] international student and cultural exchange, single player universal access national health care, arts funding and arts education funding," Hanauer said.

With his family, Hanauer said he enjoys going to restaurants, the theater, Ossining High School events or to historic sites.

Throughout this race, Hanauer said the most difficult thing to deal with has been politically motivated character assassination.
