Carlucci Backs Paid Family Leave In Briarcliff Visit

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. — State Sen. David Carlucci, D-Rockland/Westchester, advocated for the inclusion of paid family leave in the state budget during a press conference Friday at the Just for Kids Daycare Center in Briarcliff Manor.

Across the state, only 12 percent of workers have the option of getting Family Leave Insurance from employers. Compare that with the 40 percent of employees across the country who can qualify for unpaid leave, thanks to the Family and Medical Leave Act.

For many families in the state, that leaves them with a distasteful choice between working or taking care of a newborn.

“In New York state, we leave many families with the impossible choice between being able to bond and take care of their newborn or earn the income they need to provide for their family,” said Carlucci.

Carlucci's proposal includes the addition of a paid family leave insurance program through Temporary Disability Insurance systems, similar to what's done in California, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

The proposed leave would cover six weeks of the work year.

“In the United States, we lag shamefully behind the rest of the world in providing paid family leave for our workers. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the legislature to develop a plan that is beneficial for our new families and businesses.”
