WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – After an “exhaustive, statewide search,” Westchester County Executive and gubernatorial hopeful Rob Astorino has tabbed Chemung County Sherriff Chris Moss as his running mate.

In a video released on his campaign website, Astorino announced that he has chosen the president of the state’s Sherriff Association to run as his lieutenant governor.

The state Republican Party will formally nominate Moss on Thursday at the Hilton Westchester in Rye Brook.

In his statement, Astorino said it was important for him to find someone that hasn’t already been influenced by the politics in Albany. He also praised Moss’ experience overseeing a team of deputy sheriffs and a full corrections department.

“What Sheriff Moss most brings is a reformer’s passion to a state that is in desperate need of reform ethically, educationally and economically,” he said. “I wanted an Albany outsider as a running mate to help me clean up this state and help me move it into the winning column again.”

Moss, a New York lifer, has trained with the FBI and has a master’s degree in public administration from Marist College. He first was elected as sheriff in 2005 and was re-elected last year. He has been a member of the sheriff’s office for 25 years, and is a vocal opponent of the state’s SAFE Act gun control law that was passed in January last year.

Chemung's county seat is Elmira.

Astorino concluded his announcement by noting that Moss will be present at the Republican convention Thursday, where he is expected to speak.

“Those of you that don’t know Chemung County Sherriff Chris Moss are in for a real treat, because he is one of the best and brightest this state has to offer,” he said. “Make no mistake about it, there is going to be a new sheriff in town in Albany next year.”
