The fire, which began on one of two locomotives on the CSX train about 7:50 a.m., was extinguished by the Congers, Valley Cottage and New City fire departments. The departments gained a water source on North Harrison Avenue and hand dragged a hose down to the railroad tracks to feed the New City apparatus. Crews operated for about an hour extinguishing the fire in the engine compartment without incident.
The Central Nyack Fire Department was requested to assist at the scene as well, and the Haverstraw Fire Department stood by the Lake Road Firehouse in case of another emergency in town. All units were clear of the railroad tracks by 9:15 a.m.
Clarkstown police report that the fire has been completely extinguished and there is no threat to the public. Emergency services and CSX personnel will be at the location investigating the scene throughout the day. No roads are blocked at this time.
