OSSINING, N.Y. -- Scams are unfortunately up during the holidays and a specific "IRS Scam" is happening more frequently, according to the Ossining Police Department.
Police have been getting calls from residents saying the "IRS Scam is going around," they say.
The scenario is as follows: Someone saying they are "from the IRS" calls and says that you owe the government money and you better pay or someone from the World Famous Birdsall-Fagan Police & Court Facility is going to come and arrest you. The scammer tells you to pay via a prepaid card.
This is not legitimate and anyone receiving such a call should hang up, police say.
The IRS will not contact anyone by phone, according to police.
