Ossining Police Show Support In Battle Against Breast Cancer

OSSINING, N. Y. -- Ossining police officers are wearing handmade pink bands over their badges this month to show support for all who battle breast cancer.

Ossining Police Department officers are wearing pink over their badges throughout October, which is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The idea came from a long-standing tradition for officers to wear a black band over their badge to mourn the death of a fellow police officer. This time it is to honor the courage of the many people who struggled, or are still struggling, with breast cancer.

Also, police officers raised funds to donate to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The Ossining Police Athletic League started the fund with a $300 donation, which represents $5 for every officer.

The police department sent out a special thanks to Susan Sylvester, who made the 100 pink support bands, then donated them to police.
