OSSINING, N.Y. Ossining Police say a fox has been captured near Osage Drive but believe there are still more in the area.
The female fox was captured Thursday night, said Lt. Michael McElroy of the Village of Ossining Police Department. McElroy said animal control officers believe there are still two babies and the father at large. Residents in the area of Osage and Mundet Drives say they have spotted at least two foxes in the area over the last few months. With the help of a state-licensed trapper, Ossining Police set up two traps behind homes on Osage Drive East earlier this week.
While there have been varying reports of foxes all over the Village of Ossining and in Briarcliff Manor in the last few years, police say they are taking further measures after a resident recently reported being chased by one of the foxes in late June. If the fox is caught it would most likely be euthanized, said animal control Officer Mauro Santucci earlier this week.
I live right here so this is definitely a concern, Santucci said Tuesday. Were recommending that if people see a fox to call 941-5700 to report it. They are very skittish and are more afraid of you than anything else. Making noise will help and you have every right to protect yourself on your own property.
Not everyone agrees that the foxes are a threat.
Christine Steinberg, who lives on Yerks Lane off of Osage Drive West, said the reactions to the foxes have been "over the top." "I have seen it many times in the neighborhood," Steinberg wrote in an e-mail to The Daily Voice. "All it wants to do is find food and feed its babies. While I feel awful that a neighbor was harmed, in all likelhiood the fox felt threatened perhaps because people were getting too close to its young."Click here to follow Daily Voice Ossining and receive free news updates.
